Because most days, we don't.
Our lives are shockingly temporary. We take our days for granted.
Memento mori invites us to ask ourselves if we are going to waste them, or if we are we going to do something with them.
Because for all of us, they run out. And we have no idea when. So we may as well make the conservative estimate that they are short.
I do know this, though. Each of us and our days matter. It is why we feel the loss so keenly when we lose someone we love.
*Today is Dia de los Muertos--a Mexican holiday to remember friends and family members who have died. It aligns with All Souls' Day.
