Once, I was in a room full of people at a conference and a man walked in. I felt him before I saw him, and I turned around to see a famous conductor (complete with ascot) standing across the room behind me.
It was the first time I'd realized that charisma has a physical presence.
What is it in us that creates that magnetic energy?
Performers in particular know how to generate it. Here is why I think that. My experience at the conference was repeated again at a trade show. I felt a strong presence and turned to see a magician greeting people as they passed by. A few years later, I met this magician in the context of my sister-in-law's living room and he was just a normal relaxed guy with his family. The energy he generated at the trade show was part of the performance.
Charisma is an interesting concept...right?
And I don't believe it is connected to aesthetics. I think it has more to do with people doing what they were called to do. We've seen people glow with that energy, right? Athletes when they are at the top of their game. Artists when their work is celebrated. Activists fighting for a cause they believe in.
That energy is magnetic.
So why? Why are we magnetic when we are doing what we are called to do?
I think there are two reasons. The first is that most of us are going to need help in our life's work. None of us get there alone. We are meant to be in community. Charisma can facilitate making things happen by drawing people together around shared purpose.
The second is more subtle. There is beauty in purpose. And beauty draws people.
What if once we start living our purpose, we are all dosed with a little charisma?
