In yoga, there is a lot of focus on the breath. In fact, the breath is the tool that bridges the physical body and our mind, emotions and energy.
It is amazing the power a deep breath has to calm us, revitalize us and relax us.
I believe it is significant that Genesis tells the story of God breathing life into Man.
We tend to think of the process as a functional exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, but what if it is more than that?
We cannot sustain life for more than a few moments without breath. Food, water, and shelter can be absent for days, but without breath, we stop.
Maybe that is why awareness of our breath--of our complete and total dependence on it--becomes mystical. The giving and receiving of breath is intimate.
